Lesson 1: The Tones (聲調)

Mandarin is a tonal language. The "pitch" or contour of your voice changes the meaning of a syllable. Pinyin (拼音) helps us write these sounds and tones. There are four main tones plus a neutral one.

  • 1st Tone (): High & Level. Think of a sustained musical note. () - mother
  • 2nd Tone (): Rising. Like asking a question, "Huh?". () - hemp
  • 3rd Tone (): Dipping. Down, then up slightly. () - horse
  • 4th Tone (): Falling. A sharp, quick drop, like a command. () - to scold
  • Neutral Tone (ma): Light & Quick. No tone mark, pronounced softly. (ma) - question particle
